OPEC+ Weighs Output Boost Amid Iran Crisis

OPEC+ is reportedly considering a larger oil output increase to stabilize markets following the strikes in Iran. The move comes as Saudi Arabia and the UAE have already boosted exports to cushion against potential supply shocks from the escalating conflict.

A core group of eight OPEC+ members, including Saudi Arabia and Russia, has agreed to increase oil output by 206,000 barrels per day starting in April. This figure is higher than the initially anticipated 137,000 barrel-per-day hike that was expected before the recent escalation in the Middle East. The decision comes as Iran's Revolutionary Guards have warned ships against navigating the Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint for nearly 20% of the world's daily oil consumption. Following the warning, an oil tanker in the strait was reportedly struck, and shipping traffic has come to a near standstill. Analysts warn the modest production increase may do little to calm energy markets. The primary issue is the physical blockade of the strait, which effectively traps the significant spare production capacity held by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, preventing it from reaching global markets. Saudi Arabia and the UAE hold the vast majority of OPEC's spare capacity, estimated to be between 2 and 2.7 million barrels per day. However, this buffer is rendered ineffective if the crude oil cannot be transported out of the Gulf region. Fears of a prolonged disruption to this vital waterway have led to forecasts that oil prices could surge past $100 a barrel. On Friday, Brent crude, the global benchmark, had already jumped to over $73 a barrel due to the escalating conflict. The strikes targeted key Iranian oil and gas infrastructure, including facilities at the South Pars Gas Field and the Asaluyeh oil refinery. Iran, the fourth largest producer in OPEC, exports roughly 1.5 million barrels of oil per day, with over 90% of it historically destined for China.
