Freshippo Opens Fully Automated Warehouse

Alibaba's retail chain Freshippo has launched a fully automated supply chain center in Shanghai, a real-world example of the 'lights-out' warehouse concept. The facility uses robotics and AI for everything from receiving to dispatch, setting a new benchmark for omnichannel retail operations and shifting the supply chain focus from labor to coordination.

The new Freshippo facility in Shanghai is a comprehensive supply chain hub that took three years to build and spans nearly 1 million square feet. It's designed to support over 100 Freshippo stores across East China, including locations in major cities like Nanjing, Suzhou, and Hangzhou. The center is more than just a warehouse; it integrates agricultural produce processing, a centralized kitchen for ready-to-eat meals, and cold chain logistics. At the core of its operations, the facility can sort over 2.8 million items daily, utilizing a combination of robotic arms, cross-belt sorters, and automated guided vehicles (AGVs). These AGVs leverage QR code and inertial navigation technologies, allowing for their deployment and coordination via a central cloud server. The entire system is underpinned by technologies including 5G, the Internet of Things (IoT), and blockchain to enable full digitization and traceability of the supply chain. The technological backbone of Freshippo's operations is deeply integrated with the Alibaba Cloud platform. This includes a centralized warehouse management system that supports the smart store operations, along with enterprise resource planning, point-of-sale, and logistics systems. This data-driven approach allows for the full automation of warehouse operations and management, aiming to improve overall supply chain efficiency and reduce operational costs. To enhance picking, sorting, and delivery, Freshippo has implemented a smart-delivery system that utilizes high-performance RFID tags and labels. This system provides visualization and management of the entire delivery process, from goods collection and sorting to shipping and returns. The implementation of this RFID infrastructure has been credited with essentially eliminating losses within the delivery process. This advanced level of automation is a key component of Freshippo's "New Retail" strategy, which focuses on the seamless integration of online and offline channels. The stores themselves are designed as combined storage and sales facilities, optimizing the logistics chain through an "integrated storage and delivery" model supported by smart algorithms. This model has reportedly led to sales per square meter that are 3 to 5 times higher than traditional supermarkets. While specific ROI figures for the Shanghai facility have not been disclosed, Freshippo's parent company, Alibaba, has a history of leveraging automation to achieve significant efficiency gains. In other facilities, the use of robots has been responsible for handling as much as 70% of the warehouse work. The company's broader logistics arm, Cainiao, utilizes Alibaba Cloud's platform to manage automated warehousing operations, including AGV management, and can handle up to one billion packages per day. The development of such advanced logistics is a response to the competitive landscape of Chinese e-commerce. Competitors like JD.com have also invested heavily in their own automated logistics networks, with their "Asia No. 1" series of warehouses featuring extensive use of AGVs and sorting robots. These facilities have been shown to shorten order fulfillment times by several hours. JD.com's strategy has also included creating an independent "innovative retail" unit, merging its 7Fresh supermarket with other services to directly compete with Freshippo. The push toward "lights-out" warehouses is a broader trend in the industry, driven by the need to increase productivity and accuracy while reducing labor costs. The technologies and strategies being refined in facilities like Freshippo's Shanghai center are setting new standards for the global retail and logistics sectors. This focus on technological innovation and supply chain efficiency has been a key factor in Freshippo's rapid growth and its entry into the top 10 chain stores in China.
