IAEA Warns of Radiological Risk in Iran

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) warned it “cannot rule out” a potential radiological release from recent strikes in Iran. While there are no current signs of direct hits on nuclear facilities, the statement amplifies international fears of accidental or intentional damage to sensitive sites amid the conflict.

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi stated that while no increase in radiation has been detected in countries bordering Iran, the situation remains "very concerning." The agency's incident and emergency center was activated to assess potential radiological consequences from the recent military operations. Iran's ambassador to the IAEA, Reza Najafi, specifically named the Natanz enrichment complex as having been attacked. The Natanz facility is Iran's primary uranium enrichment site and has been a central point of international concern for years. Satellite imagery reportedly shows recent damage to the entrance buildings of the underground facility. This is not the first time Iran's nuclear sites have been targeted. In June 2025, U.S. and Israeli forces attacked the Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan nuclear facilities under the codename Operation Midnight Hammer. Following those strikes, the IAEA has not had on-site access to the facilities, limiting its ability to verify that nuclear materials have not been diverted. The IAEA has had long-standing issues with Iran's nuclear program, finding it in non-compliance with its safeguards agreement in the past and noting a "policy of concealment." In February 2021, Iran stopped allowing the agency access to data from its nuclear sites. The international community has expressed significant concern, with the European Union calling on Iran to comply with its legal obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. The IAEA has repeatedly urged a return to diplomacy to ensure Iran does not acquire nuclear weapons.
