Michelin eyes Mexico, Great Lakes
- Michelin is turning attention toward Mexico with an upcoming 2026 ceremony and expanding its U.S. footprint to the Great Lakes. - Mexico's Guide is set to spotlight local restaurants, and the Great Lakes edition prompted questions about Cincinnati's exclusion. - Those moves signal Michelin is actively redrawing regional coverage rather than issuing a single consolidated list. Michelin is widening its map in two directions at once: Mexico’s 2026 guide ceremony is moving to Guadalajara, and a new Great Lakes edition will debut in 2027. (excelsior.com.mx, guide.michelin.com) In Mexico, Guadalajara will host the 2026 Michelin Selection Ceremony on May 20, 2026, after the event had been held in Mexico City through 2025. Michelin and its local partners also said Jalisco, Puebla and Yucatán are joining the Mexico guide this year. (excelsior.com.mx, guide.michelin.com) That brings Michelin’s Mexico coverage to nine destinations: Mexico City, Oaxaca, Baja California, Baja California Sur, Quintana Roo, Nuevo León, plus the three new additions. Michelin’s Mexico guide launched in 2024, after Brazil in 2015 and Argentina in 2023 became the earlier Latin American entries. (guide.michelin.com, excelsior.com.mx) In the United States, Michelin announced the American Great Lakes edition on April 8, 2026, with inspectors already visiting restaurants anonymously. The first selection will be revealed in 2027, and the guide will cover Cleveland, Detroit, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Minneapolis and Pittsburgh. (guide.michelin.com, travel.yahoo.com) The split-screen rollout shows Michelin is adding territory through regional editions instead of building one national North American list. Over the last year, Michelin has also announced or released guides for Boston, Philadelphia, Atlanta, the American South and the American Southwest. (travel.yahoo.com, guide.michelin.com) That approach also leaves gaps, and some of them are now visible. Cincinnati was left out of the Great Lakes launch, even as Cleveland became the first Ohio city in Michelin’s ratings system. (dispatch.com, travel.yahoo.com) Michelin’s selection model is narrower than a simple map of food cities. In Detroit’s case, a USA Today report said the inaugural Great Lakes guide would focus on the area served by Visit Detroit, and Ann Arbor would not be included. (motorsportswire.usatoday.com, guide.michelin.com) Michelin says its inspectors judge restaurants on five criteria, including ingredient quality, technique, harmony of flavors, the chef’s point of view and consistency over time. A city’s inclusion does not guarantee any stars, Bib Gourmands or other distinctions. (travel.yahoo.com, guide.michelin.com) For now, the next fixed date is May 20 in Guadalajara. After that, the next big reveal is the first American Great Lakes list in 2027, when Michelin’s new borders become easier to judge. (excelsior.com.mx, guide.michelin.com)
