Cedars-Sinai expands virtual second opinions via AI
Cedars-Sinai is scaling its Virtual Second Opinion program, leveraging AI including LLMs to provide expert medical consultations in 39 states.
The program connects patients with Cedars-Sinai specialists for expert opinions on over 600 conditions, ranging from cancer and heart issues to pediatrics and chronic diseases. This aims to give people faster access to specialized knowledge, no matter where they are. Participants complete a questionnaire and speak with a nurse coordinator who gathers medical records. Then, a specialist reviews the records, prepares a report, and answers questions. An optional virtual session with the specialist is also available. A virtual second opinion from Cedars-Sinai costs $590 for California residents and $790 for those outside the state. While insurance doesn't cover it, FSA and HSA funds might. The program boasts a 94% satisfaction rate, citing convenience and speed as key benefits. The expansion addresses specialist shortages and the growing trend of patients actively seeking online health information. For example, one patient received a more accurate diagnosis of Crohn's colitis through the program. Cedars-Sinai also has an AI-powered virtual platform called Cedars-Sinai Connect, launched in 2023, that provides 24/7 health support through a mobile app or website.
