Nigeria pushes concrete roads

Nigeria’s Renewed Hope Agenda under Minister Davide Nweze Umahi is prioritizing concrete roads for longevity over asphalt, with visible progress on key highways being promoted on social channels (campaign posts circulating March 2026) (x.com).

Works Minister David Umahi has directed contractors on federal road projects to construct with concrete pavement and publicly stated those roads should be built to last 100 years. (newsexpressngr.com) The ministry has signalled a formal policy shift to adopt full concrete pavement on new federal projects from 2026 and said concessioning and tolling will be used as the primary financing and maintenance model. (thewhistler.ng) On the Enugu–Onitsha corridor Umahi identified Reynolds Construction Company (RCC) and subcontractor Niger Cat as lead firms, saying RCC had completed about 20km of a 23km concrete section and linking the works to MTN-funded road components that together total roughly 104km. (newsexpressngr.com) He ordered that a completed 15‑kilometre section of the Enugu–Onitsha Expressway be opened to traffic on or before March 31, 2026 as part of phased commissioning reported during his site inspection. (advocatengr.com) Inspecting the Calabar corridor Umahi said the federal government has paid approximately 30% of the contract sum for those works, signalling active disbursement on the projects. (timesng.com.ng) The Federal Ministry of Works recorded Umahi inspecting the Aleto Bridge on March 21, 2026 and issued a warning that parking of fuel tankers and other heavy vehicles on newly completed pavement is damaging the infrastructure.
