Chickamauga Lake Bass Heating Up

Chickamauga Lake is "on fire" post-warmup, with bigger early-spring fish after a cold winter and key patterns being emphasized. Meanwhile, big bass baits are seeing a resurgence with tips on how to fish them effectively, and Shallow Water Fishing Adventures is promoting expert-guided smallmouth bass trips on prime rivers.

The impressive size of Chickamauga's bass is no accident; it's the result of a long-term strategy by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA). Since the year 2000, the agency has stocked the reservoir with over 3 million Florida-strain largemouth bass fingerlings. This initiative is credited with significantly increasing the trophy potential of the lake's bass population. The success of the stocking program was solidified in February 2015 when Gabe Keen caught a 15.20-pound largemouth, a new state record at the time. Genetic testing confirmed the fish was a hybrid of a native northern largemouth and the stocked Florida-strain bass, validating the TWRA's efforts to create a premier big-bass fishery. Water temperatures are currently hovering in the low to mid-40s, pushing bass into their pre-spawn patterns. Anglers are finding success targeting fish in the 8 to 12-foot range near channel breaks, grass flats, and shell beds. Popular and effective baits for these conditions include Alabama rigs, jerkbaits, and red lipless crankbaits. Looking ahead, the focus on maintaining and enhancing the fishery continues with significant habitat improvement projects. In a partnership with Major League Fishing and other organizations, the TWRA has been installing artificial structures, like MossBack Fish Habitats, in key areas such as Richland Creek and Wolftever Creek to improve spawning success and support the ecosystem. The lake's reputation draws numerous high-profile tournaments. March 2026 is set to be a busy month with events like the Ladies Bass Anglers on March 5-6, the World Fishing Tour from March 7-14, and a Phoenix Bass Fishing League (BFL) event on March 21. Later in the season, the Big Bass Tour will arrive from May 15-17, offering large payouts and drawing hundreds of anglers to the Dayton area. These events underscore Chickamauga's status as a top-tier tournament destination, built on years of strategic fishery management.
