Indie Film Festivals Kick Off in NY and LA

Two major independent film festivals are currently underway in the U.S. The Slamdance Film Festival is running in Los Angeles from February 19-25, while New York's Winter Film Festival is taking place from February 18-22, both highlighting new work from emerging filmmakers.

- The Slamdance Film Festival was established in 1995 by a group of filmmakers whose work had been rejected by the Sundance Film Festival, creating an alternative festival "by filmmakers, for filmmakers". - Slamdance has a track record of launching the careers of notable directors, including Christopher Nolan ("Oppenheimer"), the Russo Brothers ("Avengers: Endgame"), and Bong Joon Ho ("Parasite"). - This year, the Slamdance festival will screen 141 films, with half of them from female, trans, or non-binary directors and over 41% from BIPOC creators. - A key component of Slamdance is its "Unstoppable" program, now in its sixth year, which showcases feature films and shorts by creators with visible and non-visible disabilities. - New York's Winter Film Festival, now in its 14th year, was founded with a mission to promote diversity and provide a platform for underrepresented artists, with a special emphasis on women and minority filmmakers. - The 2026 Winter Film Festival will feature 103 films from 27 different countries. In line with its mission, half of the selected films are directed by women and half by people of color. - In addition to screenings, the Winter Film Festival offers free educational workshops and panels for emerging filmmakers on topics like casting strategies and distribution. - Independent film distributor Utopia will offer a theatrical distribution deal to at least one of the Grand Prize winners at the 2026 Slamdance festival.
