1959 El Camino Restomod Debuts

The 1959 El Camino was Chevrolet's answer to the Ford Ranchero, which had created the "sedan pickup" market two years earlier. Built on a station wagon chassis, the El Camino blended car-like design and comfort with the utility of a pickup bed. In its debut year, 22,246 units were produced, outselling the competing Ranchero. The dramatic styling of the 1959 models, including iconic "batwing" fins and "cat's eye" taillamps, made the first-generation El Camino a standout. Under the hood, buyers could choose from a range of engines, from a basic inline-six to powerful V8s, including a 348-cubic-inch V8 that could produce up to 335 horsepower. The term "restomod" refers to a classic vehicle that has been restored with modern parts and technology. This approach aims to preserve the vehicle's original aesthetic while incorporating contemporary performance, reliability, and comfort, such as fuel-injected engines, modern transmissions, and updated interiors. "Pro-touring" takes the restomod concept a step further, focusing on achieving or exceeding the performance of modern sports cars. These builds feature significant upgrades to suspension, brakes, and drivetrain, and are designed to be driven on the street, track, or autocross courses. Typical pro-touring upgrades for a '59 El Camino include a modern high-performance engine, like a fuel-injected LS V8, a custom chassis with independent front suspension, and a four-link rear setup with coil-over shocks. Massive disc brakes, wider wheels and tires, and a custom interior with modern amenities like air conditioning and digital gauges are also common features.
