Everest season delayed

- The Everest 2026 climbing season was delayed because weather and Khumbu Icefall conditions made the route unsafe. - Safe Holiday Adventure reported the season start was pushed back while teams assess Icefall stability. - Outfitters may face tighter windows and climbers should expect schedule shifts, and new logistics like drone carriers are being readied ( ).

Mount Everest’s 2026 spring season is running late after unstable ice and bad weather stopped crews from opening the route through the Khumbu Icefall. (outsideonline.com) On Nepal’s south side, the Khumbu Icefall is the shifting maze of crevasses and seracs that climbers must cross to reach Camp 1. The Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee’s “Icefall Doctors” normally fix ladders and ropes there before commercial teams start acclimatization rotations. (explorersweb.com) This year, progress stalled above the committee’s No. 4 marker after Sherpas saw a hanging serac moving in warming temperatures. Alan Arnette reported on April 19 that a small team planned to recheck conditions around April 20 while expeditions waited at base camp or shifted to Lobuche for training. (alanarnette.com) ExplorersWeb reported on April 22 that the route was still unopened more than two weeks later than in spring 2025, when the Icefall was open by April 10. The same report said there was still no tentative opening date. (explorersweb.com) The delay compresses the part of the season when climbers move up and down the mountain to acclimatize before summit pushes that usually come in mid-to-late May. Outside reported that guides were already warning that a late opening could concentrate more teams into the same short weather windows. (outsideonline.com) That matters more in 2026 because Nepal’s spring permit fee rose to $15,000 from $11,000 after the September 1, 2025 increase. Operators are charging more for expeditions, and climbers now face a pricier season with less schedule margin. (kathmandupost.com) The season was already expected to be busy on the Nepal side because Tibet’s north side is closed in 2026. ExplorersWeb reported in March that companies were shifting focus to the South Col route in Nepal instead. (explorersweb.com) Teams are adapting by spending extra days around Namche Bazaar and climbing nearby peaks such as Lobuche East and Mera Peak before entering the Icefall. ExplorersWeb said no-oxygen climbers are under extra pressure because they usually need more rotations and more time at altitude. (explorersweb.com) Outfitters are also preparing a new drone cargo system for when the route finally opens. ExplorersWeb reported that Airlift Technologies, working with Asian Trekking, can move loads of up to 50 kilograms from Base Camp to Camp 1 at about 6,000 meters, reducing some carries through the Icefall. (explorersweb.com) The caution has a clear precedent on Everest. Arnette noted that a serac collapse in the Icefall killed 14 Sherpas on April 18, 2014, and a similar hazard forced teams to abandon plans in autumn 2019 before the ice finally fell with nobody beneath it. (alanarnette.com) For now, the mountain is open on paper but not yet on its main route. Until the Icefall Doctors decide the serac is stable enough to pass or has fallen away, Everest’s 2026 season will keep starting later than climbers planned. (outsideonline.com)
