The tribute follows the passing of founding member David "Trugoy the Dove" Jolicoeur on February 12, 2023, at the age of 54. The rapper had publicly discussed his battle with congestive heart failure for several years prior to his death. Tragically, Trugoy's death occurred just weeks before the group's classic catalog finally became available on streaming services on March 3, 2023. This release marked the end of a decades-long struggle over sample clearance issues and contractual disputes with their former label, Tommy Boy Records. For years, albums like their 1989 debut *3 Feet High and Rising* were absent from all digital platforms, effectively cutting off a generation of listeners from their influential work. The group regained control of their masters after Reservoir Media acquired Tommy Boy, paving the way for the digital release. De La Soul, comprised of Trugoy, Kelvin "Posdnuos" Mercer, and Vincent "Maseo" Mason, formed in Long Island, N.Y., in 1988. They were central figures in the Native Tongues collective, a group of like-minded hip-hop artists that included A Tribe Called Quest and Queen Latifah. Their debut album, *3 Feet High and Rising*, is considered a masterpiece that expanded hip-hop's soundscape with its eclectic sampling, playful wordplay, and positive "D.A.I.S.Y. Age" philosophy. This stood in stark contrast to the harder-edged gangsta rap that was prevalent at the time. Beyond their early classics, the group maintained critical acclaim with albums like *Stakes Is High* (1996) and won a Grammy Award in 2006 for their collaboration with Gorillaz on the global hit "Feel Good Inc."
