Dubai's Royal Art Goes Public
Dubai Collection Nights is bringing a privately owned masterpiece from Sheikh Mohammed's collection into public view for the first time. This rare public display is stirring excitement among art aficionados and highlights Dubai's growing status as an international arts hub. The event represents a shift toward greater cultural transparency in private royal collections.
The masterpiece in question is an untitled 2000 work by the late Syrian artist Moustafa Fathi. The display is part of the fourth edition of Dubai Collection Nights, an annual, free-to-the-public arts program running until March 8, 2026. This year's event, themed "Mapping Memories: Landscapes in Flux and Geometries of the Imagination," is centered at the Al Safa Art & Design Library and includes an exhibition called "In Attunement" curated by Jumanah Abbas. The program also features guided tours, artist studio visits, and workshops at various locations across the city. The event showcases works from the broader Dubai Collection, an initiative launched in 2021 by the Dubai Culture & Arts Authority under the patronage of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The collection operates on a unique loan-based model, bringing together modern and contemporary artworks from private and corporate collections to make them accessible to the public. This initiative is a key component of the Dubai Creative Economy Strategy, which aims to establish the emirate as a global capital for innovation by 2025. The strategy's goals include doubling the creative industries' contribution to Dubai's GDP to 5% and increasing the number of creative jobs to 140,000 by 2026. Other significant cultural projects supporting this vision include the Al Quoz Creative Zone, the Sikka Art & Design Festival, and long-term cultural visas for creative professionals. Additionally, Sheikh Mohammed has announced the future launch of the Dubai Museum of Art, a five-story museum designed by Japanese architect Tadao Ando that will appear to float on Dubai Creek. The Dubai Collection itself holds over 1,200 artworks, all of which are accessible through a digital platform in addition to physical exhibitions. The collection includes pieces from prominent Emirati artists like Hassan Sharif and Abdul Qader Al Rais, as well as international artists, reflecting Dubai's diverse cultural landscape.
