AEON Bank Embeds Zakat Into Banking App

Malaysia's AEON Bank has gone live with a Zakat calculation and payment feature directly in its app. The move shows how financial institutions are productizing complex regulatory and religious requirements, building them into core banking APIs to drive both compliance and customer engagement.

AEON Bank's Zakat integration is architected through a partnership with Tulus Digital, a social finance fintech platform. Tulus Digital serves as the authorized agent for state Zakat authorities, including Pusat Pungutan Zakat MAIWP and Lembaga Zakat Selangor, and provides payment settlement via secure API integrations and enterprise-grade payment rails directly into the authorities' institutional bank accounts. The in-app feature supports 11 distinct types of Zakat, encompassing Zakat Fitrah, Pendapatan (Income), Perniagaan (Business), Emas (Gold), and KWSP (Employees Provident Fund). This level of granularity within the API indicates a design that accommodates varied and complex business rules, a key consideration for systems in regulated financial environments. Each transaction incorporates a digital *Aqad* (contract) to ensure Shariah compliance from an end-to-end digital perspective. As Malaysia's first licensed Islamic digital bank, AEON Bank officially launched to the public on May 26, 2024. The bank's infrastructure is cloud-native, a strategic choice to enable agility and scalability for high-transaction volumes. This architectural decision is crucial for handling the anticipated peak loads during the month of Ramadan when Zakat payments surge. Upon successful transaction, the system is designed for high-throughput feedback, providing users with an immediate in-app receipt. This is followed by a formal notification from Tulus Digital's platform, and an official tax-deductible receipt is made accessible through the respective state authorities' portals. This multi-stage notification process demonstrates a distributed, event-driven architecture that ensures data consistency and verifiability across multiple systems. The integration of a retail loyalty program, the AEON Points Programme, directly within the banking app showcases a strategy of deeply embedded fintech. Points earned through transactions can be converted into cash and credited to the user's AEON Bank account, pointing to a robust internal API ecosystem designed for real-time data exchange between core banking and loyalty systems. AEON Bank's parent company, AEON Group, has been investing in a common API and cloud infrastructure on Microsoft Azure to standardize customer engagement and unify services across its various businesses. This broader digital transformation initiative provides a foundation for scalable and resilient services like the new Zakat payment feature, leveraging a shared platform for identity and core services.
