UK Athletics Guilty in Death

UK Athletics pleaded guilty to corporate manslaughter following the 2017 death of Paralympian Abdullah Hayayei. The UAE weightlifter was killed during a training session at Newham Leisure Centre when a metal pole fatally struck him, prompting renewed scrutiny of training facility safety standards.

- The specific cause of death was a discus cage that collapsed on Mr. Hayayei because its stabilizing metal base plates were missing. An investigation revealed these crucial components had been missing or unused for approximately five years. - Keith Davies, who was the head of sport for the 2017 World Para Athletics Championships, also pleaded guilty to a health and safety offense. The 78-year-old had originally been charged with gross negligence manslaughter. - Abdullah Hayayei was 36 years old at the time of his death and a father of five. He was in London to compete in the shot put, discus, and javelin F34 events. - The investigation into the incident was a lengthy and complex process, involving the examination of over 1,500 documents and interviews with more than 80 witnesses. - As a result of the guilty plea, UK Athletics faces a potential fine of between £1.2 million and £5 million. - Mr. Hayayei had made his Paralympic debut at the Rio Games in 2016 and the 2017 London event was to be his second World Championships.
