Decagon Hits $4.5B Valuation

Founded in 2023 by CEO Jesse Zhang and President Ashwin Sreenivas, Decagon has rapidly achieved a significant position in the AI customer support sector. Both founders had previously founded and sold companies before establishing Decagon. The San Francisco-based company has seen rapid growth, employing around 102 people. The company's recent $4.5 billion valuation was driven by a $250 million Series D funding round co-led by Coatue Management and Index Ventures. This round also saw participation from existing investors Andreessen Horowitz, Accel, and Bain Capital Ventures. In total, Decagon has raised $481 million over six funding rounds. Decagon's platform enables businesses to create and manage their own AI-powered customer service agents using natural language. This allows non-technical staff to update and provide feedback to the AI agents, which are designed to handle complex customer inquiries. The company's clients include prominent names like Avis Budget Group, Deutsche Telekom, Eventbrite, and Substack. The tender offer, which allows employees to sell a portion of their vested equity, is a strategic move to attract and retain top talent in a competitive AI market. This provides employees with liquidity without having to wait for an IPO and signals strong investor confidence in the company's future. Decagon's trajectory is notable in the rapidly expanding AI for customer service market, which is projected to grow significantly. The global market for AI-driven customer support agents was valued at $15.82 billion in 2025 and is expected to reach $126.82 billion by 2035. The company faces competition from both established players like Zendesk and Salesforce, and other AI-native startups such as Sierra. However, Decagon's focus on building AI agents specifically for the current technological shift, rather than adapting legacy systems, is a key part of its competitive strategy.
