GrapheneOS & Motorola Partner on Privacy Phones

Privacy-focused operating system GrapheneOS announced a partnership with Motorola at MWC 2026. The collaboration will bring GrapheneOS's hardened security features to Motorola devices, targeting the B2B and enterprise markets.

This partnership marks a significant strategy shift for GrapheneOS, which has exclusively supported Google's Pixel devices until now. The project has long cited the necessity of specific hardware-level security features—like a dedicated security chip and proper implementation of verified boot—that other manufacturers have historically failed to provide. The collaboration will focus on future Motorola hardware, as GrapheneOS developers have stated that current devices do not meet their stringent security prerequisites. This move is part of a long-term plan involving joint research and software enhancements, with the first GrapheneOS-powered Motorola device anticipated to launch in 2027. GrapheneOS provides a "hardened" version of the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) by implementing numerous security and privacy enhancements not found in standard Android. These include a reinforced kernel to resist exploits, improved app sandboxing, memory-safety features, and more granular control over app permissions, such as toggling network and sensor access on a per-app basis. Unlike typical Android builds, GrapheneOS is "de-Googled," meaning it doesn't include pre-installed Google apps and services, which significantly reduces data tracking. For users who need them, it offers the ability to install Google Play Services within a secure sandbox, granting them no special system privileges and allowing for greater user control over their data. This initiative aligns with Motorola's growing focus on the enterprise market, where security and manageability are critical. The GrapheneOS integration will complement Motorola's existing ThinkShield for mobile platform, which already provides business-grade security features and device management tools. The move signals a deeper investment by Motorola into enterprise security, announced alongside other B2B solutions like Moto Analytics for device fleet management. By offering a device with GrapheneOS pre-installed, Motorola can provide a unique, high-security option for government and corporate clients who require a more locked-down mobile environment.
