Baldur's Gate Gets Surprise Update
Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 Enhanced Editions received a rare new patch nearly 15 years after their initial updated releases. Developers reaffirm their dedication to these classic RPGs, with the news earning an approving nod from Larian Studios, the team behind Baldur's Gate 3.
- The new update, patch 2.7, is currently in a beta testing phase on Steam and is the first patch for the games since 2021. Developer Beamdog has stated the full release will also be available on GOG, but there are no plans to update the console versions. - Key features of the patch are focused on modernization and stability, including proper Steam Cloud saving, native support for Apple Silicon Macs, and a new system for dynamic language support that will make it easier to add more fan-translated languages in the future. - Upon release, the patch will add community-made translations for Brazilian Portuguese, Czech, and Ukrainian to *Baldur's Gate 2*, while *Icewind Dale* will receive Hungarian and Japanese translations. - Larian Studios' Director of Publishing, Michael Douse, responded to the news of the patch by stating, "Based! It is awesome to see people who care about Baldur's Gate doing cool things for its huge and diverse community." - The developer behind the Enhanced Editions, Beamdog, was founded by a veteran of the original *Baldur's Gate*, Cameron Tofer, who was a programmer on the classic RPGs. - When creating the *Enhanced Edition* released in 2012, Beamdog had to reverse-engineer the original 1998 game because the source art and original assets were lost in a flood. - Before Larian Studios was selected to create *Baldur's Gate 3*, Beamdog had expressed that developing the third installment was their own "long-term goal." - In addition to updating the original games, Beamdog also created a new expansion in 2016 called *Baldur's Gate: Siege of Dragonspear*, which bridges the story between the first and second games.
