AI Pioneer LeCun's Startup Raises $1B Seed
AI pioneer Yann LeCun's new startup has raised $1 billion in initial seed funding announced.
The new venture is called AMI Labs (Advanced Machine Intelligence Labs) and is based in Paris. The $1 billion seed is reportedly the largest ever for a European company. AMI Labs is focused on developing "world models," an alternative to large language models (LLMs). LeCun believes LLMs have fundamental limitations and that true AI requires systems that can understand and interact with the physical world. The company aims to build AI that can reason and plan, with applications in robotics, manufacturing, and wearables. Several high-profile investors are backing AMI Labs, including Nvidia, Jeff Bezos (Bezos Expeditions), Eric Schmidt, Mark Cuban, and Tim Berners-Lee. Alexandre LeBrun, former CEO of medical AI startup Nabla, will serve as CEO of AMI, with LeCun as executive chairman. The company will have hubs in Paris, New York, Montreal, and Singapore.
