Michigan's NCAA Strategy
Michigan Wolverines' coach Dusty May says losing LJ Cason to injury was a blow, but their basketball IQ will keep them hunting for a #1 seed [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q_PpUjPajP8].
Cason's ACL tear in late February against Illinois ended his season, during which he averaged 8.4 points and provided key depth. Coach May confirmed Cason is expected to redshirt the 2026-27 season, as he doesn't foresee Cason returning mid-season after an extended absence. The timing of Cason's surgery is yet to be determined, as the team wants him present during the Big Ten and NCAA tournaments. Despite the setback, Michigan is the likely #2 overall seed in the NCAA tournament. They finished the regular season with a 29-2 record and secured the Big Ten regular-season title. Michigan also won the Big Ten tournament, their first title since 2018. The Wolverines are aiming for the top overall seed, but Duke currently holds the edge. To pass Duke, Michigan needs to win the Big Ten Tournament and hope Duke loses before the ACC final. A strong performance could give Michigan more Quad 1 wins than Duke, potentially boosting their metrics.
