Gene Simmons Slams Rock Hall

KISS bassist Gene Simmons has doubled down on his criticism of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame for inducting rap and hip-hop artists ahead of classic rock acts like Iron Maiden. Simmons asserted that "hip-hop doesn't belong" in the Hall and made references to "ghetto" music, drawing sharp backlash from artists and fans, with Public Enemy's Chuck D issuing a pointed response.

- This is not the first time Simmons has criticized the Hall's inclusion of hip-hop acts; in 2016, he had a public back-and-forth with Ice Cube, stating N.W.A. didn't belong, which prompted MC Ren to call him out during N.W.A.'s induction speech. - The official induction criteria for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame are not strictly genre-based; an artist becomes eligible 25 years after their first commercial release and must have "demonstrated musical excellence, impact, and influence." - While Simmons champions them, Iron Maiden singer Bruce Dickinson has expressed his own disdain for the institution, calling it "an utter and complete load of bollocks" and stating in 2018 that he would refuse induction if the band were ever selected. - The Hall of Fame has a long history of inducting artists outside of the rock genre, starting with its very first class in 1986 which included Ray Charles, Sam Cooke, and James Brown. - In his response, Chuck D argued that "rock & roll is not defined by guitars alone," but by "rebellion, rhythm and cultural impact," and that while rock may be the "rock," rap and other movements are the "roll." - Simmons' own band, KISS, was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2014, a full 15 years after they first became eligible, a delay which was a source of frustration for the band. - Hip-hop artists who have been inducted into the Hall of Fame include Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five (2007), Run-DMC (2009), Public Enemy (2013), N.W.A. (2016), Tupac Shakur (2017), The Notorious B.I.G. (2020), Jay-Z (2021), Eminem (2022), and Missy Elliott (2023).
