Remote Strategy & Ops Roles Surface

Demand for remote enterprise strategy and operations talent continues, with several new roles appearing. Openings include a Director of Business Strategy for mid-market retail clients and a Strategy & Operations role in a Chief Commercial Officer's office. The roles emphasize cross-functional project management and strategic initiative delivery.

While demand for remote talent continues, the market has shifted. Remote-only job postings have stabilized, accounting for about 6% of all new roles in early 2025. However, these positions attract a disproportionately high number of applicants, receiving up to 60% of all applications. The Professional Services sector leads all industries in the volume of remote job postings, making up 24.3% of the total. This trend persists even as the overall number of new remote jobs has contracted since its peak, with many companies now favoring hybrid models customized at the team level. Boutique consulting firms, typically with fewer than 200 consultants, differ from large firms by specializing in niche markets and often serving small to mid-market clients. This specialized focus allows them to offer tailored, high-touch service and often results in faster, more nimble recruitment processes. In a boutique setting, strategy and operations consultants gain deep industry expertise, often focusing on enhancing operational effectiveness for mid-market companies. The work revolves around systematic improvements in problem-solving, daily management, strategic alignment, and people development. Core skills for these roles center on process improvement and optimization. Proficiency in methodologies like Lean, Six Sigma, Kaizen, and Total Quality Management (TQM) is crucial for identifying inefficiencies and eliminating waste. For mid-size clients, frameworks like Lean and Agile are particularly effective as they scale well across departments. Beyond specific frameworks, a "systems thinking" approach is critical for consultants. This involves understanding how different parts of a client's organization are interconnected to address challenges at their root cause, rather than just treating symptoms. The daily responsibilities in an enterprise strategy role involve gathering and analyzing market data, building financial models, and creating business cases. A significant amount of time is spent developing and delivering presentations that distill complex analyses into clear recommendations for senior executives. As companies adapt to new work models, performance measurement is shifting from hours worked to a results-oriented approach. The focus for strategy and operations professionals is on the implementation of ideas and the measurable impact of strategic initiatives.
