Dubai Taxi Explores Cryptocurrency Payments

Dubai's government-backed taxi operator is piloting cryptocurrency payments for its services. The initiative is part of the city's broader strategy to integrate digital assets into daily transactions. If successful, the move would allow residents and visitors to pay for taxi fares using cryptocurrencies.

- The move is part of the UAE's broader push towards digital payment solutions, which has already seen the introduction of dirham-backed stablecoins for some services. Notably, the AE Coin, a stablecoin pegged 1:1 to the UAE Dirham, is now accepted for some taxi services in Abu Dhabi and for federal government fee payments. - Dubai Taxi Company's CEO, Mansoor Rahma Alfalasi, has stated that the cryptocurrency payment option could be introduced "very soon," pending regulatory coordination with the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). - This initiative follows Dubai Taxi Company's (DTC) recent conversion to a public joint-stock company and its successful IPO on the Dubai Financial Market. - The introduction of crypto payments aligns with Dubai's establishment of a dedicated regulatory body for virtual assets, the Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA), which oversees licensing and compliance for crypto-related firms. - Alongside digital payments, DTC is also advancing its technological infrastructure by signing a memorandum of understanding with du to transition its main platforms to a national hypercloud for enhanced speed and security. - The company is also set to roll out autonomous taxis, with a deal to be signed with a major operator to have 50 to 100 autonomous vehicles on the road. - This exploration into crypto payments is happening alongside DTC's expansion of its e-hailing services through a strategic partnership with the global shared mobility platform Bolt. - While Dubai Taxi has not specified which cryptocurrencies it will accept, other services in the UAE have begun accepting digital currencies like Bitcoin, Ethereum, and XRP through various payment providers.
