Swatch Launches AI-Powered Watch Design Tool

Swatch has launched an AI-driven tool that allows customers to co-create bespoke watch designs. While one review described the experience as "bizarre" but compelling, the initiative points to a broader trend of using AI to enable product customization. The tool allows for new forms of consumer participation in the design process for classic products.

- The AI tool is officially named AI-DADA, a nod to the Dada art movement that originated in Zurich, Switzerland, and is powered by OpenAI's image generation technology. - To create a design, users enter a text prompt of up to 300 characters, and the tool generates a unique watch face in under two minutes. Each user is limited to three design prompts per day. - The AI is trained on over 40 years of Swatch's own creative archive, including watch designs, art, and street paintings, before tapping into OpenAI's broader dataset. - Each AI-generated watch is marked with "1/1" on the caseback to signify its uniqueness and costs approximately $210, more than double the price of a standard model. - This initiative builds upon Swatch's 2017 "Swatch x You" platform, which offered more limited, preset design customization options. - Initially, the AI customization is only available for the "NEW GENT" model; the popular MoonSwatch is excluded due to its complex Bioceramic manufacturing process. - The tool first launched in Switzerland in November 2025 and expanded to 20 additional European countries, including the UK, in February 2026. - This launch is part of a larger trend in the fashion and retail industry where generative AI is being used for everything from creating initial design prototypes to offering personalized product recommendations and virtual try-on experiences.
