China's Yiwu Turns Gala Spotlight into Tourism Boom
The city of Yiwu, China, has successfully transformed its high-profile appearance at the 2026 Spring Festival Gala into sustained tourism growth. The city was featured as a sub-venue for the New Year's Eve event. Following the broadcast, Yiwu has experienced a significant increase in visitors.
- During the Spring Festival period, Yiwu saw 2.6757 million visitors, which was an increase of 30.87% year-over-year, and generated 2.408 billion yuan in tourism revenue, a 28.43% increase. - The Yiwu Global Digital Trade Centre, which served as the main sub-venue for the gala, attracted 61,900 visitors on its first day open to the public, leading to nearly 1 million yuan in sales at its New Year market. - To convert the media attention into consumer activity, Yiwu launched 166 "Explore Yiwu with the Spring Festival Gala" themed events and developed 17 co-branded cultural products, including Year of the Horse woven bags. - The city established seven pop-up shops for Gala-branded merchandise in high-traffic areas like the airport and train stations, and even converted four double-decker buses into mobile stores, with total sales of these products exceeding 5 million yuan. - Yiwu is known as the "world's capital of small commodities," with an International Trade Market that has over 80,000 stalls offering more than 2.1 million different products. - One of the featured locations, Ximen Old Street, saw its daily foot traffic increase from 12,100 to over 30,000 visitors after it recreated scenes from the Gala, including a rattle-drum stage and phoenix lantern displays. - Another key site, the Fotang Tourist Resort, hosted events like rooftop concerts and cultural heritage performances, drawing over 600,000 visitors and generating more than 40 million yuan in tourism revenue. - Yiwu was one of four sub-venues for the 2026 Spring Festival Gala, alongside Harbin, Hefei, and Yibin, each chosen to showcase a unique aspect of China's culture and development.
