SAP used its Sapphire conference in Orlando on May 12 to put a new label on its AI strategy: the “Autonomous Enterprise.” The company said the effort is built around a new SAP Business AI Platform and a set of AI assistants and agents designed to work across finance, procurement, supply chain and other core workflows. In a separate May 14 post, SAP executive Etosha Thurman said autonomous spend management is one of the core pillars of that plan. SAP framed the pitch as a move from adding AI features inside individual applications to using AI across connected business processes. ### What did SAP actually launch at Sapphire? SAP said at Sapphire 2026 that it introduced the Autonomous Enterprise to help customers run “the world’s most critical business workflows” with humans and AI working together. The company tied that launch to a new SAP Business AI Platform, which it said would underpin its AI agents, assistants and governance controls. Christian Klein, SAP’s chief executive, told the keynote audience in Orlando that the platform “forms the basis” for the company’s vision of “the Autonomous Enterprise, where agents run the business.” SAP said the keynote drew 30,000 in-person and virtual attendees. Etosha Thurman, SAP’s chief marketing and solutions officer for intelligent spend and business network, wrote on May 14 that autonomous spend management is a “core pillar” of the Autonomous Enterprise vision. (news.sap.com) She said the target is to address fragmented workflows across procurement, travel, expenses and external workforce processes. (news.sap.com) SAP said those capabilities run across its cloud ERP portfolio, including SAP Cloud ERP Private. In Thurman’s description, the aim is to connect context across systems so AI can orchestrate routine work and surface recommendations inside spend and finance processes. ### Which new assistants did SAP name for procurement and finance work? SAP listed a series of new Joule Assistants for spend management in the May 14 announcement. (news.sap.com) The named tools include assistants for category management, sourcing, supplier management, contracts, requisitions and buying. The same SAP post said the category management assistant analyzes spending patterns and market intelligence, while the sourcing assistant handles tasks from drafting requests for proposals and bids to recommending negotiation strategies. (news.sap.com) SAP said the supplier management assistant is designed for supplier classification and risk monitoring, and the contract assistant is meant to support authoring, renewals and execution workflows. ### How is SAP describing the technology behind the pitch? SAP said the Autonomous Enterprise depends on agentic AI that can work across business data, processes and authorization controls rather than only inside one application. Klein said SAP plans to infuse ERP data and process knowledge into AI agents so they can navigate thousands of business processes and more than 7 million data fields while checking identity and access rights before returning output. (news.sap.com) The company also used Sapphire to present Joule as the interface for that system. SAP said the broader platform is being developed with partners including Anthropic, Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, Microsoft, NVIDIA and Palantir. ### What concrete next step did SAP put on the calendar? SAP’s event page said Sapphire Orlando ran from May 11 to May 13, 2026. SAP’s release navigator for spend management shows product updates scheduled for May 15 for SAP Ariba Procurement, SAP Business Network for Procurement, SAP Business Network for Supply Chain Collaboration and SAP Fieldglass; May 16 for SAP Business Network for Logistics and SAP Concur; and May 17 for SAP Business Network for Asset Management.
