GDC Opens Amid Industry Uncertainty

The Game Developers Conference opened with lower attendance from international developers, reflecting concerns about safety and costs.

Several factors contribute to the decline in international attendance, including safety concerns, immigration issues, and high costs. Many developers, particularly those from Europe, Asia, and Canada, perceive a hostile climate in the U.S., especially for those who are outspoken, gender-diverse, or part of minority communities. Reports of detainments, interrogations, and device searches at the border have created a chilling effect. Some studios are providing additional safety briefings and legal paperwork for their teams traveling to the event. Transgender developers have expressed heightened fears of profiling and mistreatment. The high cost of San Francisco, including gentrification, drug use, and harassment, is also a deterrent. Some developers find the city "alienating". This, combined with conference pricing, has priced many out of attending. Some industry figures suggest GDC may need to move to a different city or even country. Dubai has been suggested as a more accessible location. Others believe Gamescom has already surpassed GDC as the preferred event for game developers.
