Google Launches $15B 'America-India Connect' AI Infrastructure
Google has launched a $15 billion AI infrastructure initiative named America-India Connect. The project includes new subsea cables and gateways to link India with Singapore, South Africa, Australia, and the United States. The goal is to establish more resilient digital connectivity to support India's growing role as an AI hub.
- The initiative establishes Visakhapatnam as a new international subsea gateway, diversifying India's connectivity beyond the existing landing points in Mumbai and Chennai. This move is designed to increase the resilience of India's digital infrastructure. - The new subsea paths will integrate with Google's other cable systems to create more resilient connections. For instance, the new path to South Africa will connect with the Equiano and Nuvem cables, creating a redundant link to the US East Coast. A separate path will connect Mumbai to Western Australia, linking with the TalayLink and Honomoana systems for a route to the US West Coast. - This project is part of a larger trend of significant AI-focused investment in India from global tech companies. Concurrently, Tata Group has partnered with OpenAI to build a large-scale AI data center, and Microsoft has also announced major investments in the country's cloud and AI infrastructure. - The investment aligns with the Indian government's broader ambitions to establish the country as a global AI hub and attract up to $200 billion in data center investments. The government's IndiaAI mission aims to build out a comprehensive ecosystem, including compute capacity and startup financing. - Beyond the infrastructure, Google's investment includes digital skilling initiatives. The company is partnering with Karmayogi Bharat to train public servants and is launching a Google AI Professional Certificate program. - The new routes are expected to significantly increase network capacity, which is crucial as over 95% of all international internet traffic travels through undersea cables. This enhanced connectivity is foundational for the high-capacity bandwidth required for training AI models and supporting hyperscale cloud services. - The announcement was made at the India AI Impact Summit in New Delhi, where Google CEO Sundar Pichai met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The summit featured other major tech leaders, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, highlighting India's growing importance in the global AI landscape.
