Mac's Tavern to Open in Mission Viejo

A new bar and casual dining spot, Mac's Tavern, is set to open in Mission Viejo. The establishment will take over the space formerly occupied by Costello's. The tavern will be located in a retail center anchored by a Target.

The new tavern occupies a 4,200-square-foot space in a retail center with high visibility from the Interstate 5 freeway. The location sees significant daily traffic, with over 310,000 vehicles passing on the freeway and 60,000 on Crown Valley Parkway. This positions the new establishment to attract a large customer base from Mission Viejo and the surrounding South Orange County communities. The retail landscape in Orange County shows signs of a healthy market for such a new venture. The overall retail availability rate was a low 3.9% at the end of 2025, indicating strong demand for commercial space. The market also saw positive net absorption in the last quarter of 2025, meaning more retail space was leased than vacated. The economic outlook for Orange County in 2026 suggests a period of stabilization. While significant job growth is not anticipated, the housing market is expected to see a recovery. This economic environment can be favorable for the restaurant industry, as stable or improving household wealth often translates to more discretionary spending on dining and entertainment. The previous tenant, Costello's Neighborhood Tavern, was a locally-owned pub known for featuring live music. The transition to Mac's Tavern, also described as a locally owned bar and casual dining concept, suggests a continuation of a similar business model that caters to the local community. The success of this new establishment will likely depend on its ability to capture the local market and differentiate itself within a competitive landscape.
