Europe Enacts New Anti-Tourism Rules

Several popular European destinations have enacted new anti-tourism regulations in response to overtourism, including city access restrictions, higher tourist taxes, and tighter rules on short-term rentals. Some hotspots now require advanced reservations or have caps on daily visitor numbers. The measures aim to preserve local culture and quality of life for residents but may complicate vacation planning.

- In Venice, day-trippers are now required to pay an entry fee, a first for any city worldwide, and tour group sizes are limited to 25 people with a ban on loudspeakers. The city also banned cruise ships from its center in 2019 after a vessel collided with a dock. - Barcelona plans to eliminate all short-term rentals by 2028 and has increased its tourist tax. The city has also banned organized pub crawls to curb alcohol-related disturbances. - Several destinations in Spain's Balearic Islands have enacted bans on public drinking, restricted alcohol sales hours, and outlawed party boats, with fines for public drunkenness reaching up to €3,000. - The surge in overtourism has led to a housing crisis in many popular destinations, with soaring rent prices forcing local residents to relocate. In Barcelona, for instance, rent has increased by 68% over the past decade. - In response to resident complaints, some areas have implemented strict behavioral rules, such as fines of up to €500 in Sorrento for walking around in swimwear away from the beach. - The post-COVID travel rebound has intensified the issue of overtourism, leading to protests by residents in cities like Barcelona, Venice, and in Spain's Canary Islands. - Amsterdam has actively discouraged party-focused tourism with a "stay away" campaign and has banned smoking cannabis in the streets of its Red Light District. - Travelers from visa-exempt countries, including the US and UK, will soon need to obtain authorization through the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) before entering the Schengen Area.
