Hyundai's Electrified Sales Surge

Hyundai just reported record-breaking February sales, driven by a massive 79% jump in hybrid sales and a 6% rise in EV sales. The results show strong consumer appetite for both hybrid and full-EV options, positioning legacy automakers as serious contenders in the electric transition.

The February sales records weren't just a blanket success; specific models carried the weight. The IONIQ 5 EV set a new February high with a 33% year-over-year sales increase, selling 3,329 units. Hybrid versions of the Tucson, Santa Fe, and Elantra also achieved their best-ever February sales, underscoring the surge in that category. However, the EV growth is not uniform across Hyundai's lineup. While the IONIQ 5 thrived, the IONIQ 6 sedan saw a significant 77% sales decline in February, with only 229 units sold. The brand's new three-row electric SUV, the IONIQ 9, contributed 505 sales for the month. Aggressive new incentives played a key role in the IONIQ 5's record performance. In early February, Hyundai launched promotions including a $10,000 discount or 0% APR financing for 72 months on 2026 models, which helped drive sales. This strategy appears to be successfully navigating a market where federal EV tax credits have expired for many models. Hyundai's hybrid boom is capitalizing on a broader market shift. Overall US EV sales growth has slowed, with J.D. Power forecasting that hybrids would account for 13.5% of retail sales in February, while EVs would account for just 6.6%. Hyundai's 79% hybrid growth significantly outpaces the general market trend. This performance is part of a larger strategic pivot. Globally, Hyundai's electrified models accounted for approximately 27% of its total volume in 2025. The company is now targeting 30% of its global sales to come from zero-emission vehicles by 2026 and plans to expand its hybrid offerings to more than 18 models by 2030. The company's luxury division, Genesis, is also joining the push. The brand is set to introduce its first hybrid and extended-range electric models in 2026, signaling a multi-tiered approach to capturing different segments of the growing electrified market.
