Panthers Celebrate Olympic Gold
Brad Marchand scored twice as the Florida Panthers cruised to a 5-1 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Panthers were celebrating their recent Olympic gold medal, channeling that momentum into a decisive victory. The win showcases how international success can translate to club performance.
The Panthers' victory lap comes after a franchise-record seven players returned from the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics with medals. Matthew Tkachuk became the first player in franchise history to win an Olympic gold medal while with the Panthers, representing the United States. He was honored in a pre-game ceremony that also celebrated his Canadian and Finnish teammates. Three of Marchand's teammates on the Canadian national team also returned with silver medals: Sam Reinhart and Sam Bennett. Additionally, Anton Lundell, Niko Mikkola, and Eetu Luostarinen secured bronze medals with Finland. The Panthers had a league-leading 10 players and five staff members representing their respective nations at the Games. The 5-1 win over Toronto marked a crucial start to the Panthers' post-Olympic playoff push, as they began the night eight points out of the final Eastern Conference wild-card spot. The victory pulled Florida into a tie with Toronto in the standings. Before the Olympic break, the team had struggled, losing five of its last six games. The offensive outburst against the Maple Leafs was dominant from the start, with the Panthers scoring three goals in the first period and leading in scoring chances 17-4 after the first 20 minutes. Carter Verhaeghe and Evan Rodrigues also scored for Florida, with Rodrigues netting the first short-handed goal of his career. Goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky was a key factor, making 28 saves. Brad Marchand's two-goal performance tied him with Sam Reinhart for the team lead in goals with 27. His first goal opened the scoring just 3:18 into the game, and his second was an empty-netter that sealed the 4-1 lead late in the third. The 37-year-old is having a resurgent season, with his 27 goals tying a franchise record for the most in a season by a player 37 or older. The pre-game celebration included a ceremonial face-off between gold medalist Matthew Tkachuk and Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews, who also played for the victorious U.S. team. Following the face-off, Tkachuk skated with an American flag and presented the game puck to a 101-year-old U.S. Army Air Corps veteran. Matthew Tkachuk, who won back-to-back Stanley Cups with the Panthers in 2024 and 2025, added the Olympic gold to his recent string of successes. He was a key playmaker for Team USA, ranking second on the team with six assists during the tournament.
