Grammarly Acquires Superhuman

Grammarly has acquired AI-driven email platform Superhuman to build a unified productivity suite. Superhuman, last valued at $825 million, will keep its brand but integrate its tools into Grammarly's platform. The move positions the combined company to compete directly with Microsoft and Google in workplace software.

The acquisition builds on Grammarly's massive scale, which includes over 30 million daily active users and a $13 billion valuation from its 2021 funding round. The company, founded in 2009 by Ukrainian entrepreneurs Alex Shevchenko, Max Lytvyn, and Dmytro Lider, has raised over $1.5 billion in total capital. Superhuman was founded in 2014 by CEO Rahul Vohra, who previously created Rapportive, a Gmail plugin acquired by LinkedIn in 2012. Vohra is well-known in Silicon Valley for his data-driven methodology for achieving product-market fit, which he used to cultivate a loyal user base. The email service gained a cult following despite its high price of $30 per month, attracting users through an invite-only system and a mandatory 30-minute onboarding call. By late 2024, Superhuman had grown to an estimated 70,000 customers, including teams at Netflix, Spotify, and Notion. This deal marks another strategic acquisition for Grammarly under CEO Shishir Mehrotra, who took the helm after his own productivity platform, Coda, was acquired by Grammarly in late 2024. The moves signal a clear strategy to evolve from a single writing tool into a comprehensive AI-powered work suite. The combined entity presents a formidable new force in workplace software. Grammarly's reach spans over 500,000 applications, with its business tools used by employees at 96% of Fortune 500 companies. This integration directly challenges the dominance of Google Workspace and Microsoft 365. In the competitive office productivity market, Google currently holds an estimated 50% market share, with Microsoft following closely at 45%.
