Microsoft Appoints AI Leader to Head Gaming Division

Microsoft has appointed Asha Sharma, an executive with a background in AI and operations, to replace Phil Spencer as the head of its Gaming division. The move signals a broader trend in executive succession that favors leaders with fluency in AI adoption, platform strategy, and organizational scaling. This suggests that cross-domain operational experience combined with AI expertise is becoming a key path to C-suite roles.

- Before rejoining Microsoft in 2024 to lead the CoreAI Product group, Asha Sharma was the COO of Instacart, where she guided the company to its IPO and profitability. Previously, she was a VP of Product & Engineering at Meta, scaling services like Messenger and Instagram Direct to billions of users. - The leadership change extends beyond Phil Spencer's retirement; he will remain as an advisor through the summer. Xbox President Sarah Bond is also departing, and Matt Booty, the head of Xbox Game Studios, has been promoted to Chief Content Officer, reporting to Sharma. - Phil Spencer's 12-year tenure leading the gaming division was marked by a strategy of aggressive expansion, including the acquisitions of Mojang (Minecraft), ZeniMax for $8.1 billion, and Activision Blizzard for $68.7 billion, and the launch of the Game Pass subscription service. - Sharma's appointment comes as the gaming division faces pressure to improve profitability and after a significant year-over-year decline in Xbox console sales during the 2025 holiday period. - In her most recent role as President of Microsoft's CoreAI Product, Sharma's portfolio included Azure AI, Azure OpenAI Service, Azure Machine Learning, and Responsible AI, overseeing the foundational models and tools for building and deploying AI applications. - In a message to staff, Sharma committed to a renewed focus on the core Xbox console fan base and addressed her AI background directly, stating the division will not "chase short-term efficiency or flood our ecosystem with soulless AI slop." - Sharma serves on the board of directors for The Home Depot and the South Korean e-commerce giant Coupang.
