Medvedev Wins Dubai Without Playing Final

Daniil Medvedev secured back-to-back Dubai Tennis Championships titles after opponent Tallon Griekspoor withdrew due to injury hours before Sunday's final. This marks Medvedev's first successful title defense at any ATP event, confirming his growing consistency at the top of the sport. The defending champion claimed the trophy without stepping on court for the championship match.

Tallon Griekspoor's withdrawal came after scans at a local hospital revealed a significant hamstring tear. The injury was sustained during a grueling semifinal victory over Andrey Rublev, where Griekspoor visibly struggled after landing awkwardly on a serve. The injury forces the Dutchman out of the upcoming BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells and the Miami Open, a significant blow that stalls the momentum from his career-best run in Dubai. Griekspoor, the world No. 25, will be sidelined for several weeks. Prior to the anticlimactic final, Daniil Medvedev had put on a dominant performance throughout the week, not dropping a single set. His path to the title included straight-set victories over Juncheng Shang, Stan Wawrinka, Jenson Brooksby, and top-seeded Félix Auger-Aliassime. This victory marks Medvedev's 23rd career ATP Tour title and his second of the 2026 season, following a win in Brisbane. The win earns him $461,835 in prize money and 500 ranking points. With the win, Medvedev consolidates his No. 11 world ranking and is now just 45 points shy of breaking back into the top 10. The result also vaults him to third in the live ATP Race to Turin, which tracks qualification for the prestigious year-end finals. Medvedev is scheduled to compete next at the Indian Wells Masters 1000 event in the United States. However, his travel plans may be complicated by the partial closure of UAE airspace due to military operations in the region.
