Jerry Garcia-Themed Venue Planned for Chicago
A new music venue and restaurant celebrating the legacy of musician Jerry Garcia is planned for Chicago's West Loop neighborhood. While details are limited, the establishment is expected to focus on jam band music and contribute to the area's cultural scene. The project aims to create an atmosphere inspired by the Grateful Dead frontman's counter-cultural influence.
- The venue, officially named Garcia's Chicago, is a venture from concert promoter Peter Shapiro and his company Dayglo Presents, in partnership with the Jerry Garcia Family. Shapiro has a history with the Grateful Dead, having organized their 50th anniversary "Fare Thee Well" shows. - This is an offshoot of the original Garcia's, which is located next to The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York, another venue operated by Shapiro and Dayglo Presents. - Located at 1001 W. Washington Boulevard in the West Loop, the establishment occupies the former space of the restaurant Wishbone. - Garcia's Chicago is an intimate venue with a capacity of 300-350 people and features a state-of-the-art sound system by Meyer Sound. - The food and beverage program is managed by Lowder-Tascarella Hospitality Group, known for their work at The NoMad and The Modern, with a menu described as "Spain meets San Francisco" to reflect Garcia's heritage. Chicago native Ivy Carthen serves as the Executive Chef. - The venue's design incorporates Californian mid-century modern aesthetics with psychedelic elements, and displays previously unseen family photos and memorabilia that inspired Jerry Garcia. - The grand opening is scheduled for March 21, 2025, with a three-night performance by Grahame Lesh & Friends, featuring Daniel Donato and Nicki Bluhm. - The initial concert lineup also includes prominent acts such as the Blind Boys of Alabama, Grace Potter, George Porter Jr. & Runnin' Pardners, and a three-week residency by Dogs In A Pile.
