Oracle Announces $300B 'Stargate' AI Initiative
Oracle has launched a $300 billion initiative called "Stargate" aimed at redefining the AI platform arms race. The company plans to invest in 4.5GW of computing power to capture enterprise AI workloads, a move expected to reshape the cloud and AI solutions market.
- The "Stargate" project is a multi-partner initiative with a total planned investment of up to $500 billion in U.S.-based AI infrastructure. Key equity partners alongside Oracle include OpenAI, SoftBank, and investment firm MGX. - Within the venture, SoftBank is the lead financial partner with its CEO, Masayoshi Son, serving as chairman, while OpenAI has operational responsibility. - The 4.5GW of power is a massive buildout, equivalent to about a quarter of the current operational data center capacity in the U.S. and capable of supporting over 2 million specialized AI chips. - This partnership marks a shift in OpenAI's cloud strategy; while Microsoft remains a key partner and will continue to provide cloud services, it is no longer the exclusive cloud provider for all of OpenAI's massive computational needs. - The overall initiative is projected to create more than 100,000 jobs in the United States, spanning construction, highly-skilled data center operations, and indirect roles in manufacturing and local services. - While a latecomer to the cloud market, Oracle's infrastructure (OCI) was built with a foundation of bare-metal servers, which can offer better performance for AI model training compared to some established rivals. - The first major data center campus for the project is under construction in Abilene, Texas, with multiple other U.S. sites already planned in locations including New Mexico and Ohio.
