Redondo Beach Hosts Annual Kite Festival
The 52nd Annual Kite Festival is taking place today at the Redondo Beach Pier. The family-friendly event is presented by the Redondo Pier Association.
The Redondo Beach Kite Festival is one of Southern California's longest-running kite festivals. This free, all-ages event is a local tradition that draws thousands of people to the Redondo Beach Pier annually. The festival is scheduled each year on the second Sunday in March to coincide with the beginning of daylight saving time. Participants can compete for various awards, including the best hand-made kite, the highest-flying kite, the biggest kite, and the longest kite. There are also prizes for the youngest and "youngest-at-heart" kite flyers. The festival culminates in a mass group kite ascension flight on the beach just south of the pier. Beyond the high-flying spectacle, the event features a variety of pier-side entertainment. Attendees can enjoy live music, dance performances, and martial arts demonstrations throughout the afternoon. Additional activities often include face painting, arts and crafts, and even a hot-dog-on-a-stick eating contest. The Redondo Pier Association, which is supported by the businesses on the pier and boardwalk, presents the annual festival. The association is committed to hosting free community events throughout the year, including a summer concert series and a classic car show. The Redondo Beach Pier itself, originally built in 1889, is a landmark with over 50 dining, shopping, and entertainment venues.
