Singapore Thai Restaurant Gains Buzz
Ma Der Kin Khao (ມາເດີ กินข้าว) is gaining quiet buzz in Singapore for its unique Thai culinary focus in a Beach Road development. The restaurant represents the type of authentic, lesser-known dining spot that food enthusiasts seek out.
Ma Der Kin Khao, which translates to "come eat" in Lao, is a recent addition to Singapore's dining scene, having opened in late November last year. It finds its home in the City Gate mall, a mixed-use development along Beach Road that also houses other well-regarded eateries like Beerthai and the Japanese fusion restaurant Ovenbird. The restaurant distinguishes itself by offering a rare combination of traditional Thai and Laotian cuisine. This focus on the flavors of the Isan region of Thailand and neighboring Laos is not commonly found in Singapore, providing a unique culinary experience. Diners can explore a menu of authentic dishes that highlight the bold and herbaceous characteristics of the region. Specialties include Soop Pak Lao, a Laotian salad of blanched greens and mushrooms with a dressing of fermented fish sauce, and keng no mai, a traditional Laotian bamboo soup. In addition to salads and soups, the restaurant is known for its charcoal-grilled offerings, such as the popular kor moo yang, or grilled pork cheek. For those dining in groups, a set menu for four is available, featuring five sharing dishes including tom yum seafood soup and a whole steamed seabass.
