BMW’s new iX3 took the top prize at the 2026 World Car Awards in New York, and it also won World Electric Vehicle. (worldcarawards.com) The awards were announced on April 1 at the New York International Auto Show, which ran from April 1 to April 12, 2026. A jury of 98 automotive journalists from 33 countries picked the winners. (worldcarawards.com) (press.bmwgroup.com) The iX3 is BMW’s first production model on its Neue Klasse platform, the company’s next-generation electric-vehicle architecture. BMW said the model was first shown at IAA Mobility 2025 and starts its U.S. launch in summer 2026. (press.bmwgroup.com) (bmwusa.com) Neue Klasse is BMW’s reset for its electric lineup: a new battery-and-software base that underpins the car’s motors, charging, displays, and driver-assistance systems. BMW said the iX3 uses sixth-generation eDrive hardware, four high-performance onboard computers, and a new “Panoramic iDrive” display system. (press.bmwgroup.com) (bmwusa.com) BMW says the iX3 can deliver up to 805 kilometers of range on the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicles Test Procedure cycle, or about 400 miles in BMW’s preliminary U.S. estimate, and charge at up to 400 kilowatts. Those numbers put the award in the middle of a broader industry race on range, charging speed, and software features, not just styling or badge value. (press.bmwgroup.com 1) (press.bmwgroup.com 2) The World Car of the Year field started with 58 eligible vehicles worldwide. To qualify for the main award, a vehicle had to be produced at at least 10,000 units a year, priced below luxury-car levels in its main markets, and be on sale in at least two major markets on two continents between January 1, 2025 and March 30, 2026. (worldcarawards.com) By the final round, the iX3 was up against the Hyundai Palisade and Nissan Leaf for World Car of the Year. In the World Electric Vehicle category, the finalists were the iX3, Mercedes-Benz CLA, and Nissan Leaf. (worldcarawards.com) (electrifying.com) For BMW, the result adds to a long-running awards résumé but is still rare at the top level. World Car Awards said BMW previously won World Car of the Year with the 3 Series in 2006, and BMW said the iX3 victory gives the group its 10th and 11th wins across all World Car Awards categories. (worldcarawards.com) (press.bmwgroup.com) The win lands as BMW prepares to put the iX3 in U.S. showrooms with a starting price of about $60,000 and additional variants planned for early 2027. For BMW, the awards gave its first Neue Klasse model a global debut line that now includes two trophies. (bmwusa.com)
