ChatGPT memory goes live

OpenAI has turned on improved memory in ChatGPT for Plus and Pro subscribers, with Enterprise and Education rollouts coming soon — that means the assistant can retain preferences and past context across conversations instead of starting fresh each time. (help.openai.com)

ChatGPT used to act like a very smart coworker with amnesia: every new chat wiped the whiteboard clean. OpenAI has now switched on a version that can carry details from older chats into new ones for Plus and Pro users, with business and school accounts next. (help.openai.com) OpenAI splits this into two buckets. One is “saved memories,” which are details like your name, diet, or writing style that you tell ChatGPT to keep; the other is “reference chat history,” which lets it pull useful context from past conversations even if you never explicitly saved it. (help.openai.com) That means one chat can now affect the next chat. If you told ChatGPT in March that you are training for a marathon or that you prefer Python over JavaScript, a fresh conversation in April can start from there instead of asking you to repeat it. (help.openai.com) OpenAI says the new memory can feed into text chats, voice chats, and image generation. So the same preference, like “keep answers short” or “use my brand colors,” can show up across different parts of ChatGPT instead of living inside one thread. (techcrunch.com) The company is also drawing a line between memory and chat logs. OpenAI says chat history does not keep every detail forever, while saved memories are the things ChatGPT is meant to keep “top-of-mind” until you remove them. (help.openai.com) The privacy controls matter because this feature works by remembering more, not less. OpenAI says users can turn off saved memories, turn off chat history reference, use Temporary Chat for conversations they do not want remembered, and delete individual memories or all memories from settings. (help.openai.com) (openai.com) There is also a one-way switch hidden in the settings logic. OpenAI says if you turn off “reference saved memories,” that also turns off “reference chat history,” because the broader memory system stops working when the core memory toggle is disabled. (help.openai.com) The rollout is not global all at once. Reporting on the launch said the first wave excluded the United Kingdom, the European Union, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland, while OpenAI said Enterprise and Education access would come later. (techcrunch.com) (help.openai.com) This is the second big step in the same direction. OpenAI first introduced user-controlled memory in 2024, and this update moves from “remember the facts I pin” toward “learn the patterns across my past chats,” which makes ChatGPT less like a blank search box and more like software that builds a profile over time.
