Google Launches 'Pomelli' AI Tool for Small Businesses
Google Labs has launched Pomelli, a new AI marketing tool for small businesses, starting in India. The tool is designed to generate on-brand marketing campaigns, create animated content using the Veo 3.1 model, and produce professional product shots from a single image.
Pomelli's India launch is a strategic move beyond a simple market expansion; it includes a partnership with Reliance Jio to reach a massive user base. The tool is localized to work in several Indian languages, including Hindi, Tamil, Bengali, and Marathi, and is culturally aware, generating campaign ideas for local festivals like Diwali and Holi, not just generic "holiday seasons". This approach aims to make high-quality, relevant marketing accessible in a market where design can be a significant bottleneck for small businesses. The tool is a product of Google Labs' experimental arm, developed in collaboration with Google DeepMind. It aims to solve a core problem for small and medium-sized businesses: maintaining brand consistency without a dedicated creative team. The core "Business DNA" feature analyzes a company's website to automatically extract its tone of voice, color palettes, fonts, and visual style, which then informs all generated content. The "Pomelli Animate" feature is powered by Google's Veo 3.1 model, which is capable of generating high-fidelity videos up to 1080p and even 4K resolution. These videos can be created in either landscape (16:9) or portrait (9:16) aspect ratios with a fixed frame rate of 24 FPS and a duration of 4, 6, or 8 seconds. A key differentiator for Veo 3.1 is its native audio generation, which can create synchronized dialogue and sound effects directly from a text prompt. The "Photoshoot" feature addresses the high cost of professional product photography for e-commerce businesses. It utilizes a model internally referred to as "Nano Banana" to transform a single product image into a studio-quality shot with options for different backgrounds and lighting. This allows a small business to create professional-looking marketing assets from a simple smartphone picture. While in public beta, Pomelli is free to use. This contrasts with competitors like Canva and Adobe Express, which operate on subscription models. Pomelli's primary advantage is its automation of brand consistency, generating a first draft of a campaign in minutes. However, tools like Canva offer more granular design control and a larger library of templates for users who prefer a more hands-on approach. The initial rollout of Pomelli began in late 2025 in the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand before its recent launch in India. Early feedback from Western markets praised its speed but criticized the output as potentially generic. In markets like India, however, "generic but high quality" is seen as a significant upgrade over the common alternative of relying on a "cousin who knows Photoshop". Pomelli is specifically targeted at solopreneurs and small businesses with minimal marketing teams or budgets. It's designed to be a "first draft" generator, saving time on brainstorming and initial content creation. For larger marketing agencies or those requiring deep customization, the tool may be too basic as it currently lacks direct integration for posting to social media platforms.
