Tube strikes hit Heathrow

- RMT industrial action from April 21–24 suspended the Piccadilly line to Heathrow, disrupting airport rail access. Heathrow’s cheapest direct rail link from central London was knocked out this week as Tube strikes halted the Piccadilly line through Friday, April 24. (tfl.gov.uk) Transport for London said the first walkout began after midday on Tuesday, April 21, with major disruption carrying into Wednesday, April 22. A second 24-hour strike starts after midday on Thursday, April 23, and disruption is expected into Friday, April 24. (tfl.gov.uk) TfL said no service was expected on the Piccadilly line on the strike days, while any Tube services that did run would be less frequent, very busy and could finish early. The agency told passengers to check travel plans before leaving. (tfl.gov.uk; tfl.gov.uk) That hits Heathrow harder than most destinations because the Piccadilly line is one of the airport’s three direct rail links from London. Heathrow says the other two are the Elizabeth line and Heathrow Express from Paddington. (heathrow.com) Heathrow Express says trains from Paddington to Terminals 2 and 3 take 15 minutes, while Heathrow says the Elizabeth line also serves the airport directly from central London stations. Those routes are not part of the London Underground strike. (heathrow.com; tfl.gov.uk) TfL said the Elizabeth line, Docklands Light Railway, London Overground, trams and most buses would run normally during the Tube stoppage. Time Out reported those alternatives were expected to be busier as stranded Tube passengers shifted onto other routes. (tfl.gov.uk; timeout.com) Time Out also said travelers heading to Heathrow were being directed to Heathrow Express, the Elizabeth line, local buses, coaches and taxis. It warned that roads to airports could be more congested during the spring strike dates. (timeout.com) The stoppage is part of a wider dispute involving Rail, Maritime and Transport union Tube drivers, with TfL saying reduced service was expected across most lines. TfL said it was still in talks with the union and would run as many services as possible. (tfl.gov.uk) For Heathrow passengers, the practical change is simple: the airport is still reachable by rail, but not on the usual low-cost Tube route until the strike disruption clears after Friday.
