Envision Ships World's First Commercial Green Ammonia Cargo
Global green technology company Envision has launched the world's first commercial shipment of green ammonia. The cargo, produced in China, is destined for South Korea. This shipment marks a significant milestone in the development of a global supply chain for green fuels.
The green ammonia was produced at Envision's Chifeng Net Zero Industrial Park in Inner Mongolia, China, recognized as the world's largest green hydrogen-ammonia production base. This facility is powered entirely by its own off-grid wind and solar energy system, using advanced AI to manage the intermittent renewable power supply for continuous production. The recipient of this landmark cargo is LOTTE Fine Chemical, a major chemical company in South Korea. The country aims to have 7% of its electricity generated from hydrogen and ammonia by 2035 and is actively developing its clean hydrogen infrastructure to become a major clean ammonia hub in Asia. This shipment is seen as a crucial first step in establishing a viable green hydrogen and ammonia value chain to meet these goals. This delivery is the first end-to-end commercial shipment of green ammonia, covering the entire process from synthesis using renewable hydrogen to international maritime logistics. The Chifeng facility currently has an annual production capacity of 320,000 tons of green ammonia, with plans to scale up to 1.5 million tons per year by 2028. The global green ammonia market is projected to experience explosive growth, with some forecasts predicting a market value of over $40 billion by 2032, driven by the increasing demand for sustainable fertilizers and renewable energy sources. Green ammonia is also being positioned as a key alternative fuel for decarbonizing the shipping industry, a sector that accounts for nearly 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Despite its potential, the widespread adoption of green ammonia faces significant hurdles. Key challenges include the high initial production costs compared to conventional ammonia, the substantial capital investment required for new production facilities, and the lack of established infrastructure for its distribution and storage. Envision has also signed a long-term offtake agreement with Marubeni Corporation, a major Japanese trading company, to supply green ammonia. This agreement, along with the shipment to South Korea, helps to validate the commercial viability of green ammonia and sets a benchmark for its global trade.
