Iran Hits RAK Airport

Iranian missiles and drones reportedly hit Ras Al Khaimah International Airport, with smoke rising and roads closed by police. RAK Government Media Office affirmed "stable internal situation" and full sector operations amid regional developments. This comes as broader Middle East tensions are disrupting air travel corridors across the region.

While Ras Al Khaimah's government affirmed stability, the alleged strike is part of a broader, direct Iranian assault across the Gulf. On the same day, Iran launched ballistic missiles at targets in Bahrain, Qatar, and other parts of the UAE. This represents a significant escalation, moving beyond previous attacks carried out by proxy groups. Historically, tensions between Iran and the UAE are multifaceted, involving territorial disputes over islands like Abu Musa and the Greater and Lesser Tunbs, and opposing stances on regional conflicts. Prior to this direct confrontation, attacks on the UAE were often conducted by Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen, including a 2022 drone and missile strike on Abu Dhabi that resulted in casualties. The recent escalation follows joint US-Israeli military strikes on Iran, which Tehran vowed to retaliate against. In response to the Iranian barrages, the UAE, alongside other Gulf nations, temporarily closed its airspace, causing a near-total shutdown of one of the world's busiest aviation corridors and grounding flights across the region. Low-cost carrier Air Arabia, which operates a hub out of Ras Al Khaimah, confirmed it had cancelled flights from the UAE in response to the airspace closures. The disruption impacted all major UAE airports, including those in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah, stranding thousands of passengers and forcing global airlines to reroute or suspend services. Ras Al Khaimah, while not as large a global hub as Dubai, holds strategic importance. It is a significant industrial and manufacturing center and is located near the critical Strait of Hormuz shipping lane. The airport serves as a base for low-cost carriers and is part of the UAE's broader, diversified economy which has been actively attracting foreign investment. The attacks prompted emergency alerts across the UAE, with authorities confirming the interception of multiple missiles. Debris from an intercepted missile resulted in one fatality in Abu Dhabi. The UAE's Ministry of Defence condemned the assault as a "blatant violation of national sovereignty" and affirmed the nation's right to respond.
