Australia's Bate Bay Named Best Beaches

Bate Bay beaches in Sydney's Sutherland Shire have been named the best in Australia by Tourism Australia, earning recognition for their natural beauty, accessibility, and appeal to both surfers and families. The designation shines a spotlight on this stretch of sand as a must-visit destination for beach lovers.

The winning stretch of sand is not a single beach but a 4.8-kilometre expanse of nine beaches and four ocean pools in southern Sydney. This collection includes well-known spots like Cronulla, Wanda, and Elouera, alongside quieter coves and family-friendly swimming enclosures such as Gunnamatta Bay. The selection was made by Tourism Australia's official Beach Ambassador, Brad Farmer AM, who assessed over 12,500 beaches against a rigorous 130-point checklist. Key criteria included natural beauty, safety, accessibility, community engagement, and environmental management. This is the second year in a row the top honor has gone to a cluster of beaches, with Tasmania's Bay of Fires winning in 2025. Bate Bay is located on the traditional lands of the Gweagal people of the Dharawal Nation, and many of the local place names, including Cronulla and Wanda, have Indigenous origins. The area also holds a place in Australian pop culture as a filming location for the iconic coming-of-age drama *Puberty Blues*. Historically, the Bate Bay coastline has faced significant challenges, including severe storm damage in 1974 that led to a 14-year coastal management plan. This involved extensive beach nourishment and the construction of protective dunes to preserve the now-celebrated shoreline. The award is seen by local officials as a welcome recognition that will boost tourism and support local businesses. The area is notably accessible, with direct train access from Sydney's CBD and free beachside parking, making it one of the most reachable coastal regions in the country. Rounding out the top three for 2026 were Pinky Beach on Rottnest Island in Western Australia and Beachcomber Cove in Queensland. The list aims to highlight "quiet, soulful spots" that offer an authentic connection to Australia's coastal identity.
