Authorities Address Security at US Northern Border

The Sheriff of Wayne County, New York, is actively coordinating with federal agencies to manage security and migrant flows at the U.S.-Canada border. A local podcast reported that the region is facing significant flows of migrants and illicit goods, with officials noting more suspected terrorists have been intercepted at the northern border than the southern.

- The Swanton Sector of the U.S. Border Patrol, which covers Eastern New York, Vermont, and New Hampshire, experienced a significant surge in migrant encounters, with 19,385 apprehensions in Fiscal Year 2024. This represents 82% of all northern border encounters for that period. A notable demographic shift was observed, with 60% of those apprehended in this sector being from India. - In October 2024, the first month of Fiscal Year 2025, northern border encounters saw a more than 300% increase compared to the same month in FY2022, with 15,879 encounters. The Swanton Sector alone saw a more than 2,000% increase in encounters in October 2024 compared to October 2022. - Wayne County Sheriff Rob Milby is actively involved in national and state-level border security discussions. He serves on the National Sheriff's Association's Border Security Committee and is the Chairman of the New York State Sheriff's Association's Border Security Committee. - Sheriff Milby has stated that his office will assist federal partners, such as U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), to the fullest extent of the law when requested. This cooperation occurs despite New York State laws that place some limitations on the sharing of information with federal immigration authorities. - The increase in migrant traffic at the northern border is partly attributed to smuggling operations that exploit Canada's visa-free travel policies for citizens of certain countries, who then attempt to enter the U.S. illegally. - Beyond human smuggling, the northern border is also a conduit for illicit goods. In addition to narcotics like fentanyl and cocaine, authorities are concerned with the smuggling of untaxed cigarettes. In 2024, U.S. Customs and Border Protection seized 5,260 kilograms of drugs along the northern border. - The U.S. and Canadian governments have taken steps to address the flow of migrants, including an expansion of the Safe Third Country Agreement. This agreement requires asylum seekers to make their claim in the first safe country they arrive in. - In response to the changing dynamics, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced adjustments to the hours of operation at 38 ports of entry along the U.S.-Canada border, which began in January 2025. This measure is intended to reallocate resources to busier ports and enhance overall border security.
