Brighton’s Big Running Day

Brighton hosted one of its largest annual participation days with about 20,000 runners entered across the full marathon and a 10K event. (brightonjournal.co.uk) The city was effectively closed in places to accommodate the race and associated community events. (brightonjournal.co.uk)

Brighton shut major roads on Sunday, April 12, for its annual marathon weekend as thousands of runners took over the seafront and city center. (londonmarathonevents.co.uk) London Marathon Events, which now runs Brighton Marathon Weekend, scheduled the Brighton Marathon and the Brighton & Hove 10K for Sunday, April 12, 2026, with the weekend starting on Saturday, April 11. Its event resources said up to 20,000 participants were expected across the Brighton Miles, the 10K and the marathon. (londonmarathonevents.co.uk) The 10K started on Hove Lawns and London Marathon Events described it as part of the same weekend festival, with a beach village, bag drop, toilets and course markers for runners and spectators. The marathon route and closure plan stretched across Brighton and Hove, with parking suspensions and footpath restrictions on affected roads. (londonmarathonevents.co.uk, londonmarathonevents.co.uk) The race is one of Brighton’s biggest annual mass-participation events because it turns the city itself into the course, not just a stadium or park. London Marathon Events told residents to expect yellow warning signs, suspended parking and timed closures so runners and spectators could move safely through the route. (londonmarathonevents.co.uk, londonmarathonevents.co.uk) Local reporting before the start said some roads would close from about 6 a.m. and reopen in stages through the day, with all roads expected to reopen by 6:30 p.m. Reports identified the A23 London Road and Preston Road, the A259 Marine Parade and Marine Drive, and St Leonard’s Road among the main routes affected. (sussex.news) The Argus reported this year’s edition would bring a record number of runners to the city, underscoring how the event has grown since London Marathon Events took over Brighton Marathon Weekend. The organizer’s 2026 factsheet said more than 15,000 runners were expected in the 26.2-mile marathon alone. (theargus.co.uk, inyourarea.co.uk) Brighton Journal said results would be posted on the official results page as runners finished and noted the marathon cut-off was seven hours. By late afternoon, the city’s closed roads were due to reopen and the seafront was set to shift back from race course to regular Sunday traffic. (brightonjournal.co.uk, londonmarathonevents.co.uk)
