Penn State Football Begins Spring Overhaul

Penn State's spring football season is underway with a significantly rebuilt roster following graduations and transfers. Analysts are watching intense depth chart battles at key positions like quarterback and receiver. The team's performance this spring will be a key indicator for its prospects in the 2026 season.

A significant coaching overhaul accompanies the roster changes, with former Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell now at the helm. He brought in his offensive coordinator, Taylor Mouser, who is expected to install a more aggressive, downfield passing attack. This marks a schematic shift for the Nittany Lions, who will also see a new defensive coordinator in former Penn State player D'Anton Lynn, previously of USC. The quarterback competition features a clear leader in Rocco Becht, who transferred from Iowa State alongside Coach Campbell. Becht, a redshirt senior, brings a deep familiarity with Mouser's offensive system, having started for him previously. Backing him up is another Iowa State transfer, Alex Manske, and incoming four-star recruit Peyton Falzone. At wide receiver, the team is replacing all three of its 2025 starters. The new-look receiving corps is led by Iowa State transfers Chase Sowell and Brett Eskildsen, who were the Cyclones' leading receivers last season. Together, they amassed 62 receptions for 1,026 yards and seven touchdowns in 2025, bringing established chemistry with quarterback Rocco Becht to Happy Valley. The roster transformation has been extensive, with 76 players leaving through the transfer portal, graduation, or NFL declarations. To fill the gaps, Penn State has brought in 59 new players, including 40 transfers and 19 freshmen. This high volume of movement follows the departure of former head coach James Franklin and has resulted in a near-total reset of several position groups.
