Women's Street Art Exhibition Opens

'Her Canvas Her Voice' Women's History Month exhibition opened March 7 at Urban Art Gallery in Philadelphia, featuring works like Cozmonika's 'Mother' through May. The exhibition celebrates female street artists and their contributions to urban art culture. This timing aligns perfectly with Women's History Month and provides a platform for underrepresented voices in street art.

This is the second annual 'Her Canvas Her Voice' exhibition, building on its mission to explore themes of identity, resilience, and lived experience through the lens of female artists. The exhibition features a range of mediums including painting, mixed media, photography, and conceptual art. The host, Urban Art Gallery, was founded in 2013 by a West Philadelphia postman, Karl Morris, to bridge the gap between art and the urban community. It serves as a vital platform for emerging artists, particularly artists of color, who may face barriers in the traditional art world. Beyond exhibitions, the nonprofit gallery is deeply invested in the community, offering free arts and culture programs for local youth. These initiatives include "Art Buds," a visual arts course, music programs, and "Chess & Chat" mentorship sessions. The exhibition is part of a broader city-wide celebration of Women's History Month in Philadelphia. Other notable art events include special tours at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and Mural Arts Philadelphia showcasing works by and of influential women. Featured artist Cozmonika is a self-taught collage artist and "media mixologist." Her work often delves into themes of mystery, fear, and spiritual rebirth, as seen in her "My Bestiary" series created during the pandemic. Historically, the street art scene has been male-dominated, making platforms like this crucial for visibility. Philadelphia's public art scene has increasingly recognized women, with murals honoring figures like activist Lucretia Mott, writer Louisa May Alcott, and singer Patti LaBelle.
