MA Biotech sector sees layoffs
Vertex and Alltrna, both Massachusetts-based biotech firms, have trimmed local workforces as part of broader industry layoffs, reflecting sector volatility.
Vertex laid off approximately 20 employees in Massachusetts as part of a "functional reorganization". However, a company spokesperson stated that Vertex's overall workforce in the state is still growing. Vertex had previously conducted layoffs in June 2025, letting go of 140 employees in Rhode Island after ceasing development of their VX-264 diabetes therapy. Alltrna is reducing its workforce by 19 employees, which constitutes about 34% of their staff. This follows a previous layoff of 10% of their team in August 2025. Alltrna's CEO, Michelle Werner, is also stepping down, with CFO Joanne Protano adding the role of president. Despite these layoffs, Massachusetts' biopharma sector has shown innovation growth and stronger funding than expected. A recent report from MassBio indicated that the state's drug pipeline increased by nearly 14% year-over-year in 2025, outpacing the national growth of 6.8%. Early-stage innovation, particularly pre-clinical candidates, saw the largest jump in pipeline growth.
